Orange vs Red: Key Players, Strategies, and What to Watch Out For
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a season filled with high-octane matches, passionate fan bases, and fierce rivalries. One such rivalry that promises fireworks is the clash between the orange, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and the red, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
SRH: Rising Like a Phoenix
After Deccan Chargers was terminated by the IPL, the Sunrisers Hyderabad was eastablished in 2013. The team is owned by the Kavya Maran of the SUN group. Their home ground is the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad, which has a capacity of 38,000. Under David Warner’s Captaincy in 2016, they won their first cup. Furthermore, Bhuvneshwar Kumar became the first Sunrisers Hyderabad player to win the Purple Cap.
This year the team is led by Pat Cummins and they scored 250+ in three of their matches and notably achieved a milestone in the IPL 2024. Not only the current total of 287 is the highest in IPL tournaments so far, but it is also the second-highest in T20 cricket history.
They also hit most number of sixes and moreover scored the first 50 runs in just 10 minutes, hitting eight fours and three sixes. Also they hit 22 sixes againt RCB and DC. Among other records that SRH clinched include the fastest 200 by a team in IPL. The power hitters of Sunrisers Hyderabad include Travis Head (102), Abhishek Sharma (34), Heinrich Klaasen (67), Aiden Markram (32) and Abdul Samad (37).
RCB: The Perennial Contenders
Royal Challengers Bangalore is one of the most popular teams in the IPL. They have a loyal fan following known as the “RCB Brigade.” The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium serves as the team’s home ground. Despite their immense talent pool, featuring legends like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Chris Gayle, RCB haven’t been able to translate their star power into consistent championship victories. They’ve reached the finals three times but haven’t clinched the trophy since the inaugural season in 2008.
The 2024 season has seen a different RCB under the captaincy of Faf du Plessis. While their batting continues to be a strong suit, the bowling attack has been their Achilles’ heel. The absence of a reliable spinner and the inconsistency of their pacers have exposed them at crucial moments.
Royal Challengers Bangalore also hold two important IPL records, for the lowest score in an innings in IPL (49, against the Kolkata Knight Riders) and for the highest score conceded in an innings (287, against Sunrisers Hyderabad). The fastest team to score 200 runs belong to RCB who did it in 14.1 overs, while playing against PBKS at Bengaluru in 2016. The second spot of hitting most sixes came from RCB’s batters who hammered 21 sixes against Pune Warriors at Bengaluru in 2013.
The deadly combination
Furthermore, both teams have formidable opening pairs. SRH relies on the explosive combination of Abhishek Sharma and the experienced Travis Head, while RCB banks on the experience of Faf du Plessis and the aggressive Virat Kohli. SRH boasts the talented leg-spinner Rashid Khan, who can trouble even the best batsmen. RCB, on the other hand, will need their pacers like Mohammed Siraj and Josh Hazlewood to step up and contain the SRH batting order.
